Introduction – Me a Movie Critic?
Hi, my name is Bob, I live in Colorado and am in my early 60s. Besides a lifelong passion of the movies, I also enjoy skiing, golf, poker, cooking and traveling in Italy. None of this explains the title of this site: The Retired Movie Critic.
I love movies but have not been a critic up to this point. Also, I am not yet retired. But I am looking to what I want to do as I get to retirement.
But why do I feel i can review movies?
First, as a reader of this blog, you don’t need to agree with my reviews to find them interesting or useful. For example, back in 1974 I was reading a review of the new Woody Allen movie Sleeper. As it turned out the reviewer was not kind to this film. After a couple paragraphs of why they thought Sleeper was a bad movie he said that it was basically “a standard Woody Allen comedy”. This was not meant as a complement, but it was at this point I knew that I wanted to see it. I love Woody Allen movies and I enjoyed Sleeper. So, if I can write interesting reviews, whether you agree or disagree with my opinion, hopefully you will be entertained and gain insight on what movies you might want to spend your time and money seeing.
Second, I have watched and studied movies more than the average person. And I even know more than some reviewers. One professional review I read of The Incredibles (2004, Pixar-Disney) had (to me) a glaring and inexcusable error.
This reviewer said that the character that made the super hero costumes, Edna “E” Mode, was based on Yoko Ono. I knew immediately that the reviewer had not done her research and/or was too young to know some basic movie history. Because what she should have known was that Edna was based primarly on Edith Head(1897-1981) the Oscar winning costume designer for the movies. I knew this from experience, but if the reviewer had gone to IMDB they would have seen that the director, Brad Bird, did base Edna primarily on Edith and a little on another costume designer named Una Jones. Take a look at the photos of Edna Edith and Yoko and see why I was surprised by the error.
So, I can be a movie reviewer.
Since I am not yet retired and new to being a reviewer I will start slowly. I will aim to start by reviewing one movie a month. and since I enjoy all genre of movies (with the exception of horror films) I will review a wide range of of movies. Then as I get experience and time, my goal is to review a movie every week.
If you have wanted to try your hand at reviewing movies I will also host Guest Reviews on this site. Just contact me about what editorial standards I will apply and you can get started.
