Review: Entourage

Movie Rating of 2.5

The boys are back! I loved the HBO series Entourage (2004-2011), and was looking forward to the Entourage film. If you are also a fan of the series you will enjoy this film, just not as much as you might have hoped. But, let’s start with the positives.

First, everyone is back! Vinnie, E, Turtle, Drama, and especially Ari. In fact Jeremy Piven has always made Ari Gold the pivotal character of the show. Ari is a loud, crude, scheming, manic, and totally engaging agent to Adrian Grenier’s sweet, loveable movie start Vincent. While Vinnie and his “Entourage” have having their fun and drama, Ari is loudly, steering the ship that is Vinnie’s career.

The plot of Entourage is very simple. Since we last saw the boys, Ari is back from Italy and is the head of the studio that is making the next Vincent Chase movie “Hyde” (a update of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”). And Vince is directing, Eric (Kevin Connolly) is producing and Johnny (Kevin Dillon) has a part in it. The movie is over budget and the Texas financers, Billy Bob Thorton and overweight Haley Joe Osment, won’t provide the money to finish the film. If “Hyde” is a bomb everyone is doomed.

At the same time E and his one time girlfriend Sloan (Emmanuelle Chriqui) are about to have a baby. Turtle (the much slimmed down Jerry Ferrara), has his own storyline with Ronda Rousey.

So, pretty much it is just like the TV series. And that’s the problem. Maybe my expectations were too high, but, the film might have been better if it were a TV movie or a limited series update. Towards the end of this film someone makes a suggestion that maybe the story of their lives might make a good movie. Then the laugh and say “maybe a TV series”. They were right.

But, please see this movie! It is worth your time. If you’re a big fan of the parties, the Hollywood excess, the star cameos and especially the characters, go see it right away. If you’re not so sure, wait until you can see it on On Demand.
